South African woman has given birth to 10 babies in single delivery who was already a mother of twins, may set new Guinness world record which was previously set by Halima Cisse who gave birth to 9 babies last month (May).
•A South African woman Sithole who is 37-year-old gave birth to 10 babies at once who was already a mother to 6-year-old twins.
•She was seven months and seven days pregnant while delivering the children by caesarian section.
•She was initially told by the doctors that she might give birth to 8 babies.
•It was known that all the ten babies are alive and doing well, will spend few months in an incubator.
A woman in South Africa gave birth to 10 babies at once.
Gossamer Thamara Sithole, a woman from South Africa who has given birth to 10 babies at once, may set a new world record. The world record was previously set by Halima Cisse who gave birth to 9 babies in May.
Sithole’s husband Teboho Tsotetsi told Pretoria news that his 37-year-old wife gave birth to 10 babies via a caesarian section in the hospital of Pretoria on the 7th of June. Earlier, the doctors after the medical scan detected that she will give birth to 6 babies, soon after other medical tests and scans they claimed that she is carrying 8 babies, but instead she has given birth to 10 babies.
It’s seven boys and three girls. All are doing well and are kept under observation for the next few months in an incubator. She was seven months and seven weeks pregnant.
As doctors said she is going to deliver eight babies, Sithole said that two babies were not detected in scans as they were inside the wrong tube. All the babies are alive and healthy.
“I am happy, I am emotional”, I can’t talk now as I am astonished by the birth of 10 babies expecting to be 8 babies, said Teboho Tsotetsi to the Pretoria news.
Before the delivery, Gosiame Thamara Sithole said in an interview with the Pretoria News, “I am shocked with my pregnancy. It was tough at the beginning. I was sick. It’s still difficult but I am used to it. I don’t feel much pain, but it is still uncomfortable. I pray to God to help me deliver my children in a healthy condition”.
Professor Dini Mawela deputy head of the school of medicine in Pretoria said this case was unusual. This type of pregnancy is usually caused by fertility treatment.
However, Sithole had cleared her pregnancy was natural and was not under any fertility treatment. She was already a mother to two twins who are six years old as of now. She also said her pregnancy was unplanned and conceived naturally.
It was a unique situation. I don’t know how often it happens. But it was a high-risk pregnancy as there won’t be enough space in the mother’s womb to carry ten babies at a time. So, we need to deliver the babies early as they can’t grow in the womb. We need to go for pre-term delivery as the babies come out small and chances of survival increase, said Professor Dini Mawela.
The Guinness world record was previously held by Halima Cisse who gave birth to 9 children at once in Morocco last month. This can be replaced by Sithole as she had given birth to 10 children at once after the investigations.
